According to the fluff, the Tau use appropriate camouflage for the environment they are fighting in, tau sept colors. This means that you could use pretty much any paint scheme that you want, as long as you come up with a backstory for why this serves to blend into the environment.

In some ways, this is a bit of a companion piece to a post I wrote last time I was collecting Tau, where I looked at all the different support systems that are represented by bits in the plastic kits. Unlike Space Marines, however, Tau Sept colours are limited to the markings, not the overall armour colour. The armour, instead, is meant to be painted as camouflage, to help the warriors blend in to their battlefield surroundings. The classic Tau scheme of ochre is a generic desert camo, and the Tau Sept colour is white. This brings me on to the next point, though. We jump straight into the tutorial with an assembled Fire Warrior who has been undercoated black. First step is to paint the trousers, sleeves, gloves and balaclava under the helmet faceplate with Rhinox Hide. This is a base paint so goes on with one coat with no need to water down. Now we need to paint the highlights onto the previous layer. We do this by painting Gorthor Brown onto all the raised areas of the cloth leaving Rhinox Hide in the recesses. Highlight the previous stage further using Baneblade Brown. The highlights are a little too bright for military cloth which should be a bit duller and not shiny at all. This is tone down the colour by tinting it brown. It also helps blend the colours a little. This is a layer paint so has less pigment in it then a base paint. So you will need to paint three thin coats to achieve an even smooth coat.

I decided in the end to actually start at brown, and then slowly work up to a bright highlight keeping a strong green tone through, and then wrapping it all together with a glaze. Your unpainted Tau models are a veritable blank canvas ready for whatever you want them to become when you consider a white color scheme. The color yellow allows you to weather your models with compelling and realistic special effects. To push the contrast further, before moving on to the remaining basecoats, I thinned green ink heavily and sprayed it from below to push the shadows towards green and have them contrast with the red armour.
