Wiggles

The Wiggles are an Australian children's music group formed in Sydney in Wilcher left the group after their first album. Page retired in due to ill health and was replaced by understudy Sam Moran , but returned in , replacing Moran. Cook and Fatt retained their shareholding in the group and all three continued to have input into its creative and production aspects, while engaging in occasional reunion performances. Watkins departed the group in , with Hawkins taking her place. Field and Fatt were members of the Australian pop band the Cockroaches in the s, and Cook was a member of several bands before meeting Field and Page at Macquarie University , where they were studying to become pre-school teachers. In , Field was inspired to create an album of children's music based upon concepts of early childhood education, and he enlisted Cook, Page, and Fatt to assist him. They began touring to promote the album and became so successful, they quit their teaching jobs to perform full-time. The group augmented their act with costumed characters Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus and Wags the Dog, as well as the human character Captain Feathersword, played by Paul Paddick since Shirley Shawn the Unicorn was later introduced. They originally travelled with a small group of dancers, which later grew into a larger troupe. The group's albums, DVDs and television programs have been produced independently since their inception. The height of their popularity came in the early s, after they broke into the American market.

Film about the Australian musical phenomenon, who are akin to the Beatles for toddlers, is bubbly and insightful, if a tad long. A s a longtime admirer of the hit song Hot Potato , a profoundly poetic if slightly repetitive celebration of simple cuisine and the temperature at which it can be served, I was excited to have its origins unpacked in a new film exploring its creators. A refreshingly different perspective on musical greatness. It does, however, begin by addressing the big questions — big, at least, in the Wiggleverse: a bright world of catchy lyrics, costumed animals and a big red car. Including how the original members — Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, Greg Page and Murray Cook — feel towards the colour with which their professional legacies would be forever associated. I found this moment rather cute: the suggestion some people are so besotted with yellow and the various Wiggles who have worn it including Page, Emma Watkins and Tsehay Hawkins that they might be personally offended by the comment. Like Finding the Voice , this film is an authorised work. But whereas Farnsy was occasionally heard but never seen in his doco, the Wiggles front the camera in theirs, sitting down for interviews and seeming to genuinely enjoy the process, coming across as down-to-earth and likable. Hot Potato gets more convoluted and less affecting when it moves through latter-era Wiggles history, the originals substituted for various replacements who I lost track of.
