About a month ago a member of this Amino called Enma Ai posted a theory concerning Jack's birth name and I can't figure out how to link it. Help I suck. In their post, they explained how Jack is not actually our favorite Samurai's real name though people would figure that a Japanese man, the emperor's son no less [that feel when you and a bunch of other people forget that Jack is technically a prince too], from the Edo period wouldn't have a blatantly White and modern name and that in the second episode it's revealed that "Jack" is actually slang used in the future that is basically the equivalent of "dude" or "bro" and that the samurai adopted it after a few guys refered to him as such possibly to more easily hide his identity, but I digress. Anyway, this fact seems to be common knowledge among older fans, so I won't say much more about it. This does actually make sense considering that during Jack's training as a child to young adult, Japanese wouldn't have been a very well-known culture or language around the world and would probably be somewhat difficult for some cultures, especially Western ones, to adjust to or pronounce. However, as far as I've seen not many people have actually made suggestions to Jack's birth name. So far, I have three possible names that'd I'd like to discuss. I know that until his real name is cannonly mentioned, if ever, then he'll still be our golden boy Jack, but it's fun to theorize. The logic behind this one is that it would be in tribute to Aku's voice actor Mako Iwamatsu who died after the show's cancelation, similarly to how Legend of Korra also named a main character in tribute to Mako as a thank you for previously voicing Iroh in The Last Airbender. The next two required a bit of help from my friend, Yoshiki Yoshi for short , who is a Japanese native and is, of course, fluent in the language Pictured: That conversation. Both of these names function on the fact that "Aku" is Japanese for "Evil" and since Samurai Jack at its most basic level is a Good vs Evil story, it would make sense for Jack's real name to be the equivalent of "Good". According to Yoshi, "Yoi" is an alright translation of the word "Good", though he does say that it's "archaic" so I imagine most Japanese people don't particularly use "yoi" much anymore. But, it would make sense for someone from the Edo period, like Jack.
