It is one of the four comprehensive universities in the University System of Georgia. As of [update] , VSU had over 12, undergraduate and graduate students. Degree levels offered at Valdosta State include associate, bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degree. The Graduate School also includes over sixty graduate programs to choose from both online and in-person. The school that would become Valdosta State University was founded in Colonel W. West led the legislation through the Georgia Senate , and C. Ashley and E. McRee pushed it through the House. West gave the property that is now the main part of campus to the state for use by the new institution. The president chosen was Richard Holmes Powell. His travels in the American southwest led him to choose the Spanish Mission style of architecture for the institution's buildings. Most came to be teachers and studied subjects from literature to physics to agriculture. The Valdosta State University campus is divided into two areas: main campus, which houses much of the academic and administrative departments, and north campus, which primarily houses the Langdale College of Business. Buildings on the Main Campus are modeled in Spanish Mission architecture using terra stucco construction and terra cotta roofs, and are surrounded by picturesque landscaping featuring palms, pines, azaleas, camelias and a mix of other beautiful flowering plants. It features an attractive pedestrian mall of inlaid brick and well-designed seating areas. The buildings follow a red brick modified form of Georgian architecture.
