Last month, I replaced my well-travelled 35L Outbreaker with the new 40L V4, and am traveling with the new item now. The 35L remains like new after a couple years of backpacking and travel in planes, cars, trains, busses, boats, etc. The new version is just as comfortable, well-organized, secure, and easy to clean as before, with some clear improvements. One nice addition is a small outside top pocket, which is great for easy access to oft-used items like sunglasses, earplugs, comb, and headphones. Some unnecessary things have been removed, such as a couple pen and card slots, pockets and dividers in the main compartment, and a redundant outside handle. By staying on my back, it stays much cleaner than ground-level wheeled luggage that drags and bounces over floors, muddy sidewalks, and worse. I've tried and tested all of Tortuga's gear, and this bag is possibly their best one yet. Amazing materials and brilliant organization make it worth the price, but I cannot emphasize just how comfortable it is. Once the bag is fully secured it feels like it becomes a part of you I do wish the laptop compartment would open clam-shall style like the discontinued Outbreaker did , but aside from that I can't complain about anything really. It's a world-class bag from a world-class company! Great work Tortuga! I've spent 5 years traveling with different iterations of the Tortuga travel backpack and I literally won't travel with anyone else.
That lower pocket on the front exterior is designed to be 3-D and have depth, and it is tortuga outbreaker. This is a little confusing until you learn which section is which. A few things: I do agree that the Outbreaker has a decent, adjustable suspension system — but if you are familiar with other technical hiking packs, you should know that the comparison regarding hiking vs travel bag suspension systems is not even close, tortuga outbreaker.

A big, burly backpack that can comfortably carry a ton of kit. The new silhouette feels more streamlined without the wasted bulk of the Outbreaker. That trip taught us how hard it is to travel with the wrong gear. There is a large mesh compartment on the opposite side useful for dirty laundry or small items. Thanks for this review. The rectangular design maximises the amount you can take on a plane and makes it easy to pack, especially if you use packing cubes like us. I also sewed another grab handle on the bottom of the bag. That wraps up our review on this pack. Albuquerque, N. They take up space — it would be cool if they could just cinch all the way down. The main external features on the Tortuga Outbreaker 35L are two large front facing slash pockets, two mesh water bottle pockets, hip belt pockets, and side compression straps. You can get even more organized with a set of packing cubes. The Patagonia Black Hole Pack is a simple, minimalist backpack with a and decent carry system. It just works.

Underneath the zipper is a lined tablet sleeve that should fit most tablets of any size. Overall this compartment is pretty straightforward, but having it is a game-changer. But at the end of the day, the Tortuga beats it in most ways. Travel backpacks must be just as durable. I would still prefer the main compartment to have the depth instead of the top lid. I just used mine this morning. We are impressed with how much pressure and weight is taken off your shoulders. In a battle between two backpacks designed by the same company, check out our full comparison on the Tortuga Outbreaker vs Setout here. This makes it ideal to for your cell phone, or possibly another tablet… if you travel with two tablets that is. The small pockets on the hip belt are designed to conveniently stash coins and keys when going through airport security. This is a bit of a bummer since sometimes another handle or two comes in handy when in transit. This might sound random to people that aren't crawling around the travel community as much as I am online - but some people won't like the sound of this bag.
