According to The Kipling Society , the name "show[s] that he is the chief among tigers". Shere Khan is depicted by Kipling with being born with a crippled leg and was derisively nicknamed "Lungri" "The Lame One" by his mother. In " Mowgli's Brothers ", Shere Khan's failed attempt to hunt humans causes a human "cub" to stray from its parents. Mowgli is accepted into Akela 's wolf pack and is protected by Bagheera a panther and Baloo a bear. Furious at losing his kill, the tiger swears that the boy will be his some day.

A powerful Bengal tiger, Shere Khan is considered suave and charming, yet is deeply feared as the most ferocious predator in the jungle. His reputation was such that he needed only to show himself to intimidate his victims. Khan is equally notorious for his animosity toward man, due to his fear of guns and fire. As such, he has vowed to kill any human that steps foot in the jungle. Although not considered canon to The Jungle Book and its sequel, Jungle Cubs provides a backstory to the tiger. However, he was egotistical and cocky which sometimes led to situations where his friends had to bail him out. Nonetheless, he was fond of his friends and was often protective of them when there was danger. In many episodes he even saved their lives. He was also quite affectionate and loving toward his old grandmother. However, as a predator, Khan acted tough as he thought the other animals wouldn't respect him if he showed his soft side. He and his friends went on many adventures together but, at some undetermined point in time, Shere Khan became vicious and belligerent, feared by all the inhabitants of the jungle.

Shere Khan becomes annoyed and immediately attempts to attack Mowgli, who flinches in fear, finally understanding the true danger of the ferocious beast. He then decides to hunt man, claiming to have a craving for "Indian food". Shere Khan, however, was unamused.

Then everybody in the jungle suffers. The reason the beasts give among themselves is that Man is the weakest and most defenseless of all living things, and it is unsportsmanlike to touch him.
