Prisoners 2013
It's been a decade since fans initially saw Prisoners and watched Hugh Jackman portray a father who decided to take matters into his own hands after his daughter and her friend were kidnapped on Thanksgiving Day. As we all know the terror the Wolverine actor can strike into anyone, watching him stop at nothing to get his daughter back was a true eye-opener. From personally torturing a potential suspect to evading the police because he felt like they were dragging their feet on the investigation, audiences were rooting for Keller Dover Jackman to get justice for his daughter no matter the cost. Unfortunately, as the storyline became so meticulously intertwined in the end, plenty of Prisoners fans may have missed a couple of the truly incredible details that the writers threw into the original ending. By no means was this story a situation where everyone lived happily ever after, but some brutal justice was served to more people than you may think. After Keller Dover's daughter was reported missing, he believed that the person who lived in the mysterious camper that was parked on the street all afternoon was a suspect. In a blind rage, along with a desperate need for answers, Dover zeroed in on the young man who had been driving the van, and he attacked him minutes after he was out of police custody. Surprisingly enough, while Dover had Alex Paul Dano pinned down, the latter made a comment about the girls crying only when he left. That was all the evidence Dover needed to take matters into his own hands. He ended up kidnapping Alex, taking him to an abandoned building, and ruthlessly torturing him for days. Dover would later learn that Alex actually comforted the girls when his "aunt" actually kidnapped them. Dover went to Alex and Holly's house to "apologize" for attacking Alex, but he was really casing the place to see if there was any trace of the girls. It was not until Dover went back a second time that he learned about what Holly had been doing over the years.
She claims to be waging "a war on God" for letting their son die of cancer. Kidnapping thrillers often lull us into a sense of safety in the opening sequences, showing the normal rhythms of life that will soon be shattered. Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners" does not go that route. It opens with a shot of a snowy forest, where a deer quietly noses around for food. Into the frame comes the barrel of a shotgun. We hear a prayer being intoned. Boom, the deer goes down. The camera pulls back to show a father Hugh Jackman and teenage son Dylan Minnette , in day-glo hunting gear staring at their kill through the ranks of bare trees. On the drive home, the father, who seems humorless, intense, and a bit of a bore, lectures the son on how to always be prepared for the worst in life. This opening is so heavy-handed that it's amazing that the film doesn't instantly collapse under its symbolic weight. Shot by the great Roger Deakins , regular cinematographer for the Coen brothers, the movie is drenched in rain and drained of color.
