Paarthurnax Dragon Language : , sometimes referred to as the Old One , [3] is an ancient dragon who resides in Skyrim. He serves as the leader of the Greybeards, [4] noted as surpassing all the others in his mastery of the Way of the Voice. While few details are known regarding Paarthurnax as a supporter of the Dragon Cult during the Dragon War , the Dragonguard considered him a legendary lieutenant of Alduin, [2] and during the Fourth Era, the Blades accused Paarthurnax of committing many atrocities. Late during the Dragon War, the leaders of the rebellion used an Elder Scroll to cast Alduin adrift into time atop the Throat of the World. Paarthurnax was not present during the fight but felt when Alduin was defeated, like the other dragons. During the th year of the Second Era, the Dragonguard noted that Paarthurnax was already under the protection of the Greybeards of High Hrothgar, refusing to act until they had an opportunity to strike against him. During the Dragon Crisis of 4E , the Last Dragonborn met with Paarthurnax on several occasions, the first to do so in over a hundred years. Before the fight broke out, he offered Paarthurnax one last chance to join his side, stating that his power had waxed whereas the power of Paarthurnax had waned. Paarthurnax refused to ever serve Alduin again. With Alduin defeated, Paarthurnax mourned the death of Alduin despite believing he had abandoned the right path in the arrogance of his power. He shared the belief of the Last Dragonborn that Alduin needed to be destroyed. With the death of Alduin, Paarthurnax was rejuvenated and set out to attempt to convert the remaining dragons to the Way of the Voice.

He served as Alduin 's lieutenant during the Dragon War in the Merethic Era , during which he was said to have committed and witnessed unspeakable atrocities against mankind. Despite dragons being immortal, Paarthurnax shows clear signs of great age, including tattered skin on his wings and tail, broken and chipped horns and chin-spikes, dulled color in his skin and eyes, and several teeth missing. Paarthurnax claims it was Alduin's false claim of godhood that turned him against his older brother. As with all Dragons, the lust for power was innate and still strong within him and if left unchecked, he would surely revert to his old ways. To overcome this, he retired to the peak of the Throat of the World and lived in seclusion so that he could meditate and focus on the Way of the Voice , a pacifist creed developed by Jurgen Windcaller that preached the Thu'um should only be used for the worship and glory of the gods rather than martial exploits. Jurgen Windcaller also founded the Greybeards, a monastic order dedicated to mastering the Way of the Voice. He built High Hrothgar , [3] located near the peak of the Throat of the World, which served as the monastery where the Greybeards meditated and perfected their Voice.

This article is about the quest. For the dragon, see Paarthurnax dragon. Delphine and Esbern have discovered that Paarthurnax is the Master of the Greybeards and an ancient enemy of the Blades. They will tell you that their oaths as Blades prevents them from giving you any further help until you kill Paarthurnax. If you go to Arngeir and tell him that the Blades want Paarthurnax dead, he will tell you that Paarthurnax supported Alduin because all dragons were in league with Alduin at first, and that Paarthurnax could not help it. He will go on to say that Paarthurnax did eventually rebel against Alduin, and was instrumental in Alduin's first demise. You are given the option to tell him that Paarthurnax must die or that you are going to spare the dragon.
