Multiple videos have surfaced online of a crowd of people gathered around what appears to be a merchandise table, with several people reaching for more than one postcard, poster, or t-shirt among other items. People can be heard shouting over one another, one in particular shouting for people to get in line. Details will be released at a later date. A similar message is posted on the Van Gogh Museum website, with a note stating that most items are expected to be back in stock around mid-October encouraging fans to keep an eye on their website. The exhibit is currently sold out through Oct. In light of the situation, the Van Gogh museum has put a couple rules in place to make sure no guest or guests can walk off with more than one card. But all the hype has caused some issues more on that later. The card features Vincent's iconic 'Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat' painting — but redesigned with the loveable Pikachu mascot on the front who is wearing the hat instead. The Van Gogh Museum has since had to end the scavenger hunt promotion as of 14 October, and has stopped handing out these free cards to visitors over safety concerns. Thankfully, I was able to complete the scavenger hunt during my visit to the Van Gogh Museum and fill out the activity sheet for the Pikachu Promo card. It involved answering questions about the exhibit, as well as fun Pokemon and Vincent Van Gogh trivia, though some questions were tricky. Upon leaving the Van Gogh Museum, we queued up outside to hand in our activity sheets, but our answers were not checked at all by the person in the kiosk, and we didn't get to keep the activity sheet as a souvenir, which I was hoping for. We of course didn't indulge in this, but it goes to show the power of brand collaboration in producing something so rare and desirable. I asked one of the gift shop workers if any of the merchandise would be available online, to which they laughed a little, shrugged, and said "I honestly don't know. Everything is on eBay". Another worker told me they hadn't replenished stock since after the first opening day, with nothing out back or in storage, and no extra merch deliveries planned for the coming weeks. Pokemon has never been shy about crossing over with other brands for promotional events. You'd think that more than 25 years in, it would be running out of options when it comes to fresh collaborations. On the one hand, you might think that's the case when it's teaming up with something as left field as the Van Gogh Museum. The first rollout of stock resulted in the Van Gogh Museum being mobbed as fans attempted to be among the few who'd get the free promotional Pikachu card. The situation was so serious that Pokemon announced shortly afterward that the card would no longer be available at the museum.
