About 5 days ago I was driving about 45mph and was in 5th gear and out of no where it downshifted into 3rd very hard causing my whole car to jerk and almost stop in the middle of the road. The next day I was on the highway going 70 and the same thing happened, was in 5th, went to 3rd and jerked my whole car again even worse.

Few months ago, I started noticing something different with my car: - After starting the car and put the gear to D indicating gear 1 , it wouldn't do anything. Car didn't move forward at all. They scanned my car and told me there's a problem with the solenoid but they couldn't figure out which one. Then I took the transmission apart and found out that it's time to rebuild the transmission. So I did order some parts including friction discs, friction plates, gasket seal kit, piston pump, hydraulic valves, solenoids all 4. Basically my trusted mechanic had it rebuilt.

If your fluid levels are too low, the pressure required to engage gears correctly decreases, resulting in slipping. A little attention now can save you a whole lot of trouble later. Another culprit for transmission slipping in your Mazda 3 could be worn clutches. Over time, everyday wear and tear can cause the clutch plates to lose their grip, making it difficult for them to hold the gears properly.

I categorize myself as a spirited driver, I have a little fun here and there but don't thrash the car. But, it progressively got louder, and now its to the point its just flat out obnoxious. Its a mid-toned gear whine that is more apparent on acceleration, but is very apparent on deceleration as well. The sound is identical in 5th and 6th, it changes slightly with speed, but not with gear change. For instance, 60mph in 5th sounds the same as 60mph in 6th.
