The Battle of Arcadiopolis of saw the Byzantine forces defeat an invading Kievan - Pecheneg - Magyar force who were aiming to capture Constantinople , miles kilometres to the east. As the capital of the Roman province of Europa , Acradiopolis had its own bishop , who was recorded as attending a number of important church councils; it was noted as an autocephalous archbishopric by the seventh century.
The city was conquered by Ottoman Sultan Murad I in the second half of the 14th century. The bus terminal is less than a 10 minute walk from all the historic sites. The caravanserai, soup kitchen, and guest house are the only parts of the complex that no longer exist. The mosque has one minaret.
