The series is divided into several parts, and each part focuses on a different protagonist and antagonist. Currently, Araki is writing part 7, or JoJolion. Though the manga isn't finished, plenty of fans still love the series for what it currently offers. Like many popular anime, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has its own power system. It is best known for its borderline surreal take on the Shonen genre, giving rise to countless memes across the Internet. While the first two Parts of the series were exceptional, it was not until Part 3's Stardust Crusaders that Araki revolutionized the series by introducing the concept of Stands. A physical manifestation of a person's fighting spirit, each Stand varies depending on its user. Many of them are humanoid, but there are those that manifest into different forms. On the other hand, there are a few Stands that possess incredibly complex and powerful abilities, to the point where they could be considered godlike. This power system is notably unique, although it's based on a classic anime foundation: eccentricity. Pannacotta Fugo's Purple Haze is aggressively dangerous, which is why he seldom overuses his Stand during battle. Another drawback is that this ability is rather difficult to control, making it a real threat should Pannacotta lose his hold over Purple Haze. Stands are defined as personifications of "life energy" although it's later changed to "spiritual energy" whose abilities are given visual form. According to Joseph Joestar , the name "Stand" comes from the fact they usually manifest standing next to the User: ready to act. The only power that's truly impossible for a Stand is bringing the dead back to life. A Stand can also represent the manifestation of an individual's innate "fighting spirit" and embodies, to an extent, the individual's psyche. However, Stands may also derive through the exploration of possibilities and expression of the mind, in which case, only a large amount of mental strength is required. Beyond that definition, Stands present themselves in a large variety of forms and with different behaviors, if they are sentient at all.

Stands are primarily defined by the type of power they possess. In a fight, it is crucial for a Stand User to know the type of the Stand's ability as it uncovers their weaknesses. The User of a Close-Range Stand generally prefers to confront their opponents directly, allowing their Stand's superior might to shine, while also bypassing their short reach. However, most are nearly powerless against an opponent who is either out of reach or hidden. A Stand being a Close-Range Stand doesn't necessarily mean that its ability has a short-range. Some Stands may not be able to go far away from their User but have an ability that influences a large zone around them.
