Full of violence, sex, and the kind of humour that strikes right at the heart of the self- righteous, this film has everything to inflame the Christian audience no doubt tearing this thing apart. Which is a shame, because the production is top notch, and the comedic timing is impeccable. Judas as a character is able to be sympathised with while also being the kind of despicable low-life that seems to embody most of today's oversexed youth. Any way you look at it, it is intelligent and challenging.
As Fred Hampton, the murdered chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, Kaluuya is riveting as he prowls the stage inspiring his audiences. His speeches burn with intensity and conviction. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since he was a trusted confidant whose ultimate goal was betrayal, the Biblical allusion in the title is an appropriate one. Little of that comes through in the scenes between Plemons and Stanfield, though there are moments where it appears the film may deepen this fraught relationship. We also spend too much time within the FBI. Despite the excellent cinematography by Sean Bobbitt and the editing by Kristan Sprague , these sequences are not as interesting as anything featuring the Black Panthers and their goals. In any scene featuring Judas' bad-boy lifestyle habits and choices, I can't pinpoint any songs by name, but I feel that I could tag any stereotypical rock and roll "i'm no saint i'm a stone cold sinner" song from the '70s or '80s and it would fit. Judas and the adult Mary Magdalene are treated as perverse, but one has to feel for them given the scorn thrust upon them by Jesus. If one views this purely through an entertainment lens, someone with knowledge of scripture and politics both modern and historical will note some interesting biblical references and jokes through iconography. See the full list. Rebellious, intelligent, sexy and constantly funny, a feature film could be made out of this material and I would lap it up. Judas as a character is able to be sympathised with while also being the kind of despicable low-life that seems to embody most of today's oversexed youth. Anyone seeing Mary in this video will immediately wish to some very nasty things to her and the tale confirms that she will probably enjoy all of them. The way the songs were cut in and out was unnatural; it reminded me of the early YouTube days when people would use MovieMaker and make those video stories, and any time the mood changed they'd just have the current song fade out completely in the middle of a line and then fade in a new song, in the middle of a new line. And she may teach you a thing or two. See production info at IMDbPro. Sign In Sign In. I say this because, well A few years pass, and both Judas and Jesus prepare for their first day of school.
