Grand moff rank

The Empire in Star Wars is a vast churning machine spanning large swathes of the galaxy. Its fleets are filled with those of a singleminded coldness to assert order and control over other worlds. Enrolling other planets into the iron grip of their organization with glee. Its ranks are numerous, and there are a multitude of names, but one of the highest is the title of Moff. Four little letters asserted at the start of an individual's name come with a lot of power and influence but are near impossible to attain for those of a lower station. Though it may sound odd, the title of Moff is essentially a political rank held within the Empire. It basically means Space Governor for a system of planets within the territory of the Empire and later First Order.

Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, introduced as the main antagonist of the original Star Wars film [a] although he has less screen time than his iconic subordinate Darth Vader , in which he was played by Peter Cushing. In the film, Tarkin is depicted as a high-ranking officer of the Galactic Empire , placed in charge of the operations on the Death Star , the Empire's moon —sized battle station. He orders the destruction of the planet Alderaan by the station's superlaser, and dies at the end of the film when the Death Star is destroyed by Luke Skywalker. He is also the protagonist of the novel Tarkin , which details the character's backstory and rise to power within the Empire's ranks. In the novel, Tarkin advocates for the Tarkin Doctrine , a military system based on "the threat of force, rather than force itself". His philosophy becomes central to Imperial policy and earns him the position of the first Grand Moff in the Empire. Tarkin's character has been well received, and he has been called "one of the most formidable villains in Star Wars history. Governor Tarkin's character was originally conceived as a holy man from the planet Aquila, but was changed later in the creative process into an antagonist. During the production of Star Wars , Peter Cushing found Tarkin's boots, furnished by the wardrobe department, to be very uncomfortable. Director George Lucas agreed to limit shots where Cushing's feet would be visible, allowing him to wear slippers. In the prequel film Revenge of the Sith , Wayne Pygram was able to achieve the likeness of a young version of Tarkin through the use of prosthetic makeup. In the anthology film Rogue One , archive footage [13] and a digital scan of Peter Cushing's life mask made for the film Top Secret! The footage from A New Hope was lit very differently to the lighting used in Rogue One and had to be digitally changed. The more they manipulated the lighting to match the other actors in the scenes the less like Cushing the character model looked, which meant creating a balancing act between "a digital figure" and "one who looked precisely like Cushing".

The Moff has been an Imperial thorn in the side of the good guys since the original Star Wars in The Mandalorian is no different with its central villain, the mysterious Moff Gideon. Moffs function as sector governors in a galaxy far, far away and they tend to be among the most dangerous - and most deadly - members of the Galactic Empire. Through the Star Wars canon, as well as the books and comics now relegated to Legends status, Moffs have led a bloody crusade against the Rebellion and in some cases, against their own. This cyborg Imperial officer looks a little like Darth Vader in appearance, thanks to his breathing mask, but it's not an homage.
An ambitious, ruthless proponent of military power, Wilhuff Tarkin became a favorite of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and rose rapidly through the Imperial ranks. Shortly after the Empire's creation, he was put in charge of the construction of the Death Star. Tarkin saw the Death Star as a way to crush all dissent to the Empire's rule -- fear of the station's planet-killing superlaser would keep the galaxy's star systems in line. He demonstrated the station's power by destroying Alderaan, but died soon afterwards when the Death Star itself was destroyed. The experience taught Tarkin that life was an ongoing battle for survival, with the strong and smart staying on top by gaining and keeping control of those below them. When the Clone Wars began, Tarkin opted for renewed military service, undertaking a number of covert missions on behalf of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. It was a fateful meeting, though the two would find themselves at odds when Tarkin -- now an admiral -- led the investigation of a terrorist attack on the Jedi Temple and prosecuted Ahsoka Tano in connection with that attack. After the Clone War ends, the new Empire reappropriates Kamino training facilities to challenge the value of continuing to employ clone soldiers.
