Alan Turing : Do you know why people like violence? It is because it feels good. Humans find violence deeply satisfying. But remove the satisfaction, and the act becomes Alan Turing : When people talk to each other, they never say what they mean. Alan Turing : They say something else and you're expected to just know what they mean.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as pioneering mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, who was highly influential, but persecuted for being gay. Age group 11—16 years. Duration mins. An excellent film portraying Turins character, live and times. Although I appreciate the writers freedom and use of poetic license, I found that there were several historical indesrepencies which I could not ignore. Cumberbatch was perfectly cast for the role, with his ability to portray the character of Turin and his multiple insecurities. I have rated this film such, as I believe that parts of the film may have been over-dramatised with an experienced use of real life footage mixed with although a slightly adapted version of the re-enacted moments in Bletchleys past. The directors made clever use of a real life Enigma machine, however I feel that not removing the museums explanation plaque from the inside of its lid in some far off shots, was a mistake, I am pleased to say that in all close-ups it had been removed. Despite the lack of visible action, this film clearly portrayed the effect Bletchley had on the British war effort however it was more focused on Turin and his colleagues. The facts have truly been, if slightly warped in places, stuck to and the moving part of the film is not necessarily Turin's contribution at Bletchley but him being persecuted in spite of this, this shows how the official secrets act, although it protected many aspects of British intelligence, left many of its assets exposed to persicution despite their true patriotism.

The film's title quotes the name of the game cryptanalyst Alan Turing proposed for answering the question "Can machines think? In , two policemen, Nock and Staehl, investigate the mathematician Alan Turing after an apparent break-in at his home. In , the young Turing is unhappy and bullied at boarding school. He develops a friendship with Christopher Morcom , who sparks his interest in cryptography. Turing develops romantic feelings for him, but Christopher soon dies from tuberculosis. The team is trying to analyze the Enigma machine , which the Nazis use to send coded messages.
He would later be publicly vilified and savagely punished for engaging in homosexual activity, which was criminalized in England at the time, before committing suicide in Instead of being festooned with a chest full of medals, the closeted genius who saved countless lives by significantly shortening the war was cruelly subjected to chemically-induced castration in lieu of jail time. And, because much of the details were kept classified for 50 years, few knew of the extent of his wartime feats, even though he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services in He was officially pardoned of his offenses by Queen Elizabeth in —a case of too little too late. This atypical biopic about the brilliant, impossibly arrogant and socially awkward mathematician played by Benedict Cumberbatch , impeccably perfect in every way is a somewhat hard read at first.

As the cogs of his Heath Robinsonesque creation whir, Turing struggles impotently to decode the signals of human interaction, the secret of his sexuality and the spectre of a lost childhood friend becoming talismanic ghosts in the machine. Just as Deckard fell for the android Rachael, so Turing is enraptured not by people but by an artificial intelligence. Both he and his machine are struggling to understand coded communications for which they have no instinctive key, strangers in a strange land, searching for a common language. With such an alienated antihero it would be easy for The Imitation Game to fall into either arch chilliness or mechanical contrivance. Plaudits, then, to Cumberbatch for making his protagonist complex rather than just complicated. While Turing remains enticingly unreadable, his coterie of friends and colleagues is rendered in immediately identifiable vignettes, precisely cast, efficiently played.
