You don't want to crack the case or make the hole so large that the plug goes in so deep that it inhibits flow through the passage.

By understanding the importance of finding the right drill size, you can ensure precision and success in your drilling projects. National Pipe Taper NPT threads are designed to create a tight seal between pipes and fittings, ensuring leak-free connections. This thread standard follows a tapering design, where the diameter gradually decreases towards the end of the thread. Its versatility allows it to be employed in both commercial and residential settings, making it a widely recognized and readily available thread size. Using an incorrect drill size can lead to issues such as thread stripping or breakage, compromising the overall quality of your drilling project. To ensure a proper fit and reliable results, it is essential to refer to a drill size chart or recommended sizes. By selecting the appropriate drill bit size, you can optimize your drilling tasks and achieve accurate results.

The first is the thread pitch, which is determined by the number of threads per inch TPI. The second thing to consider is the depth of the hole being tapped. A general rule of thumb is that the length of the drill bit should be equal to or slightly longer than twice the depth of the hole being tapped. First of all, the bit must be large enough to create a hole that is big enough for the tap to pass through. Secondly, the bit should also be able to create a clean and straight hole so that the threads on the tap will be able to grip properly. This will give you plenty of space for the tap to pass through while still creating a clean and straight hole. Be sure to test out the fit before beginning your project so that you can avoid any headaches down the road! When it comes to taps, there are a few different types and sizes. This tap is used to create threads in materials such as wood, metal, and plastic.

If you cut it too deep the plug you are fitting may not jam before it runs into in the galley and starts blocking things, also if the threads are too shallow the plug will not end up flush with the case which can be a problem if you are blocking an oil pump output or similar, so cutting the threads is bit 'suck it and see' for this reason.

February 12, You will need a drill bit that is slightly larger in diameter than the tap you are using.
