I had the idea for the road trip right about this time last year. I was living in Los Angeles and planning to get married in August, chevy rv van.
The travel philosophy behind our own camper was to simply use public spaces and resources for everything not included in our van build. But Eric and Ashley of Create Your Own Roadshow wanted to build out a camper van that could not only replace their permanent residence — but could also go at least a week boondocking in full-on wilderness before resupplying. The result? Basically a tiny home on wheels that would make any vanlife Instagram influencer blush. We asked Eric to walk us through their choice of van — a Chevy Express — and their complete DIY camper van conversion process. Eric was also kind enough to share some highlights from the road, like some favorite places he and Ashley have taken their Chevy van and how they make van life work for them financially.

We've seen plenty of custom Chevrolet Astro campers over the years, but only in the do-it-yourself realm. It wasn't uncommon to see a raised-roof Astro equipped with little more than wood trim and a TV. There are only 28, miles on this RV — 27, to be specific — which averages out to just 1, miles per year. Going by the van's history, most of its trips likely didn't take place on US shores. It was built by a company called Greenland for sale in Japan. Its official name is the Matorun , and behind the front seats is a small but cozy full-service motorhome with a table, dual sinks in the kitchen, a small stove, a microwave, and a wet bathroom. It was imported to the US in September and is currently for sale in California. There's no mention of electrical output or tank capacities for this motorhome, something interested buyers have brought up in the comments section of the auction. The seller isn't responding either, so sadly we have nothing to share regarding these stats. Furthermore, there's no confirmation that these systems are functional, though the photos certainly show a spiffy RV. And on that front, we'd love to know how the RV conversion was performed. The Astro is a unibody van with subframes versus a full-frame vehicle.
After bringing it home, I had to deal with neighbors calling and complaining about parking it on the street. There really is nothing to fear traveling alone as a woman.

Chevy Express vans are a popular option for van life due to their relative affordability, availability, and unassuming nature. A: We started the build by defining our goals; we wanted to be able to spend at least one week off-grid without having to resupply, we wanted to have enough storage to fit all our camping gear, we wanted to be able to camp in freezing temperatures comfortably, and we wanted a clean, modern, and minimalist aesthetic.
