I took the game for a spin at Gamescom and walked away unsure of what to expect from the final product. AEW: Fight Forever is finally here, and it promises a return to the glory days of Nintendo 64 wrestling titles. Instead, it goes for something that the series has lacked for a long time, being a wrestling videogame first and foremost. Beginning life as a small independent organization it was eventually bought by the Khan family who among many things own the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over the years their roster and fanbase have grown immensely. Professional wrestlers put their asses on the line multiple times a week to entertain people around the globe, and Fight Forever is one of the best representations of that in a fun video game.

For decades no wrestling game has touched No Mercy when it comes to actual gameplay. Whereas it had two main attack buttons for striking and grappling, AEW offers three for punching, kicking and grappling. For the most part, combat is satisfying enough, with a healthy range of moves available for each wrestler. As well as weak and strong versions of your punch and kick attacks, you can apply weak or strong grapples, essentially doubling the number of grapple moves at your disposal. Speaking of weapons, AEW: Fight Forever takes cues from its real-life counterpart by offering a generally more violent take on sports entertainment. And wait until you find the thumbtacks.
