Matt Smith reflects on his decision to join Doctor Who despite early fears about taking on the role. Following David Tennant's tenure, Smith led the series from to Across three seasons and the show's 50th anniversary special, Smith's Eleventh Doctor faced the end of the universe, an elaborate plot to take his life, the mystery of a woman he kept meeting across history, and his darkest hour. While Smith did have some reservations about being associated with the role at such a young age, the actor was ultimately glad that he accepted the part. Check out Smith's full recollection below:. I thought, well, y'know, would I always just be Doctor Who? And then, I realized actually, always being Doctor Who is amazing. It's a great thing. It's still one of the great pleasures of my life. British actor Matt Smith was a talented soccer player as a teenager and dreamed of life as a professional athlete. After a back injury, he went on to become a member of the National Youth Theatre. At age 26, he became the youngest actor to be cast as the lead in the popular sci-fi TV series Doctor Who. He excelled early at sports, playing for youth football soccer teams Northampton Town F. Smith dreamed of playing professional football, but a serious back injury, spondylosis, curtailed that plan. Smith's drama teacher suggested he play a role in a school production of Twelve Angry Men , sparking a love of acting. Smith eventually joined the National Youth Theatre in London, where his first roles on the stage included those in Murder in the Cathedral and The Master and Margarita. He went on to study drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia.
