By Chris Schilling. As Konami celebrates 20 years of its enduring football series, we look back at the key games and moments during its two decades in the spotlight. It lacked some of the presentational pizzazz of FIFA, not to mention the official licences these would become familiar points of distinction as the two series became fierce rivals , but while Konami made up names for all the players, they more closely resembled their real world counterparts. Even then there was a subtle but noticeable shift away from the more arcade-style football of the era, as simulation elements made their way into the game, including stamina and attitude meters and an unusually thorough training mode. Later that year, Konami released an improved Deluxe edition, with additional — albeit rudimentary — commentary lines, and co-operative play, allowing two friends to play against a CPU opponent. For the first time, 16 club teams had been added to the game, though their players had been replaced by a series of nobodies. Players had to take charge of this squad of no-hopers and turn them into world-beaters, transferring in new faces by paying with points earned by winning games against the odds. This wonderfully compelling idea essentially allowed players to create their own rags-to-riches story, and it was an instant hit with critics and audiences alike.
