Whiterun

Whiterun is one of the nine major cities in the province of Skyrim[1] whiterun serving as the capital of Whiterun Hold and its vast open tundra, whiterun.

Its central location makes it the province's major commercial hub, as well as a crucial strategic point in the Civil War between the Imperial Legion loyalists and Stormcloak rebels, as control of Whiterun Hold grants access to all surrounding lands. Whiterun is initially nominally aligned with the Empire, but Jarl Balgruuf the Greater seems to care more about the people of Whiterun than either side of the conflict, rendering the hold effectively neutral. Whiterun comprises three districts arranged in tiers and connected by stairways. The Plains District is the lowest and contains the city's marketplace and shops, inns, a few homes, and the city gates.

Whiterun

Whiterun is a city in central Skyrim , and will be the first major city the player arrives at when following the main quest. Although many characters wander the districts, many can be found in the Plain District at some point in the day. The Plain District is essentially a market district, but includes an Inn, Shops and Breezehome which you can purchase. Fast Travelling to Whiterun will drop you right inside the doors of the Plain District next to Warmaiden's and Breezehome. The Wind District is primarily residential and includes homes of the two fueding families of Grey-Mane and Battle-Born. As a visitor you can take sides in a quest to solve a mystery. Due to the layout of the Wind District it is also fairly easy to use Lockpicking to break into homes during the day. Few guards wander the streets so use Sneak to find out when you are detected. The Cloud District is home to Dragonsreach and its Dungeons. Lavender can be picked on both sides of Dragonsreach. Dragonsreach is the keep of the city of Whiterun. Jarl Balgruuf the Greater rules the city from here.

It is here that everything begins as you start your journey from Helgen, through Riverwood, all the way to this big city. Whiterun is economically one of the most vibrant cities, even if it pales in comparison to Solitude. As the ultimate starter city, it is here where you'll most likely become a Thane for the first time, get your first Housecarl, and purchase your first property. It is initially neutral in Skyrim's Civil War , but both sides are actively competing to gain control of Whiterun. As a result, it is the site of the first battle of the war, Battle for Whiterun Imperial or Stormcloaks. The Imperial Legion will secure the allegiance of the incumbent Jarl Balgruuf , who seeks reinforcements in the face of an imminent Stormcloak siege, and Balgruuf's government, now aligned with the Empire, will accordingly remain in control of the hold should the Imperial Legion successfully defend the city; otherwise, the victorious Stormcloaks will put Vignar Gray-Mane in power.
