This would be really useful since I was using the online version, but when I look up a word it just displays an html doc that shows an error instead of my word. William Whitaker's Words is a computer program that parses the inflection or conjugation of a Latin word, and also translates the root into English. Given an English word, the program outputs Latin translations. The software, written in Ada , is free for download but can be used online through several different hosts as well. This program has gained popularity among Latinists because of its simple interface, high coverage of the Latin lexicon and mostly accurate results [ citation needed ]. Nevertheless, the user has to check the results, since WORDS uses a set of rules based on natural prefixation , suffixation , declension and conjugation to determine the possibility of an entry. As a consequence of this approach of analysing the structure of words, there is no guarantee that these words were ever used in Latin literature or speech , even if the program finds a possible meaning to a given word. A few years after the original author's death, the software became the subject of digital preservation efforts. The dictionary consists of about 39, entries, which would result in hundreds of thousands of variations, counting declensions and conjugations. Unlike other apps based on Whitaker's words, this is a port of the original code rather than simply using the dictionary, and therefore essentially feature complete compared to the desktop program.
Up to now there is no satisfactory computer facility for this. The best on the net is a search of the Perseus dictionary, finding all uses of the English word in the text of the dictionary. TXT is a convenient form for that purpose. However, except for very simple situations, the resulting raw output can be excessive and often spurious. It is necessary to TRIM the output for the general user.

Initially the interpretation and selection among these were left to the user, as in paper dictionaries. Then, upon inquiry, a list of the associated Latin dictionary entries is output. Various groups of meanings may have varying frequency or likelihood. Update words binary to bit - May be needed on newer devices. Priorities for display are based on frequencies.
