Occupying the ground floor of a historic Whip City building, Westwood's expansive layout features a late 19th century ambiance of dark wood, raw brick, and clustered dining alcoves. The establishment's menu favors the conventional, bringing together steakhouse favorites and Italian-influenced pasta inspirations. Since the eatery is popular as a lunch spot, we decided to make a noon hour visit. The midday menu, we discovered, is derivative of the dinner bill of fare, offering entrees, burgers, hearty sandwiches, wraps, and full-plate salads. Hand breaded and deep-fried, the pencil-thin asparagus spears were wrapped in cheese-enhanced panko crust. An aioli enriched with grated parmesan was served on the side; its creamy intensity nicely amplified the savory flavor of each spear. The result, though quite rich, was entirely enjoyable, with the mild scallop sweetness contrasting with the pronounced richness of cheddar and the lush smokiness of bacon. Garlic mashed potato and baby carrots sweetened with honey completed the meal experience. Westwood's version did their kitchen credit, from the properly cooked, slightly al dente penne to the creamy Alfredo sauce that served as the composition's linchpin. Baby spinach and diced sun-dried tomatoes contributed color and high-profile flavor, while plenty of fresh tasting grilled chicken and Gorgonzola cheese crumbles finished the dish.
