The Roman expansion in Italy covers a series of conflicts in which Rome grew from being a small Italian city-state to be the ruler of the Italian region. Roman tradition attributes to the Roman kings the first war against the Sabines and the first conquests around the Alban Hills and down to the coast of Latium. The birth of the Roman Republic after the overthrow of the Etruscan monarch of Rome in BC began a series of major wars between the Romans and the Etruscans. In the second half of the 4th century BC Rome clashed repeatedly with the Samnites , a powerful tribal coalition of the Apennine region. By the end of these wars, Rome had become the most powerful state in central Italy and began to expand to the north and to the south. Resistance in Etruria was finally crushed in — BC, the same year the First Punic War began and brought Roman forces outside of the peninsula for the first time. Later, in conjunction with the Second Punic War — BC , Rome also proceeded to subjugate the Celtic territories north of the Apennines of Cisalpine Gaul from to BC and then of the neighboring populations of Veneti to the east and Ligures to the west until reach the foothills of the Alps.

The monument was realized by Giuseppe Sacconi. From an architectural perspective, it was conceived as a modern forum , an agora on three levels connected by stairways and dominated by a portico characterized by a colonnade. The complex process of national unity and liberation from foreign domination carried out by King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, to whom the monument is dedicated, has a great symbolic and representative value, being architecturally and artistically centred on the Italian unification —for this reason the Vittoriano is considered one of the national symbols of Italy. It also preserves the Altar of the Fatherland Italian : Altare della Patria , first an altar of the goddess Roma , then also a shrine of the Italian Unknown Soldier , thus adopting the function of a secular temple consecrated to Italy. Because of its great representative value, the entire Vittoriano is often called the Altare della Patria, although the latter constitutes only a part of the monument. The Vittoriano is on the Capitoline Hill , in the symbolic centre of ancient Rome , and is connected to the modern one thanks to roads that radiate from Piazza Venezia. Its design is a neoclassical interpretation of the Roman Forum. It features stairways, Corinthian columns , fountains, an equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel II, and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. On its summit there would have been a majestic portico characterized by a long colonnade and two imposing propylaea , one dedicated to the "unity of the homeland ", and the other to the "freedom of the citizens", concepts metaphorically linked to the figure of Victor Emmanuel II. The base houses the museum of Italian unification , [4] [5] and in a lift was added to the structure, allowing visitors to access the roof for degree views of Rome.
