American stoneware was the most popular dishware of the 19th century in the United States. Produced mostly by potters on the east coast, blue and white spongeware was created for utilitiarian use and remains in good condition today due to it's durablity. The color of antique spongeware was made by applying the cobalt oxide to the pottery piece with a sponge or rag. Sponges were cut into various sizes and stamped all over a piece or sponged border with a hand-painted central design. Vintage Red Wing Pottery stoneware mixing bowl, made in Minnesota in the s or 30s. Size number 7, as impressed on base. This is the only marking on the bowl which indicates the age. Early Spongeware bowls did not have any writing or stamp on the bottom. Red Wing reproduced the bowl in the 60s and 70s, adding a blue or red stamp reading Red Wing Oven Ware.
