Like VFW Posts across the nation, Post members gather to nomination [March] and, subsequently, elect officers [April] who will lead the local posts forward for the new administrative year. An administrative year effectively begins at the conclusion of the Department Convention [usually in late June] and concludes at the following Department Convention. Ultimately, the Post membership elects four 4 members while the Commander elect appoints three 3 members. Prior to the opening of nominations, the Post must determine the balloting method, election date and time, procedure for tallying votes, and procedure for tie-breaker rules. Any member of the VFW Post can nominate another member for an elected officer position. For example, if Comrade Smith wishes to nominate Comrade Thompson as Post Commander, but Comrade Thompson is not able to make the meeting to accept nomination, he or she must give Comrade Smith a signed letter that states the acceptance of nomination, and that letter must be presented to the current Post Adjutant prior to the opening of nominations. Unless the Post utilizes a Poll system, nominations will remain open until election of each office [at the Election meeting] on an office-by-office basis. All members in good standing are welcome to vote — essentially, that means that the member cannot be suspended under Article IX, must be current on his or her dues, and must be a member of the Post in which he or she wishes to vote at. For example, At-Large Members are not allowed to vote.
