The ranger walked with the easy lope of someone who spends most of the summer hiking, and her backpack immediately caught my eye. In the spring of , I backpacked miles through the Grand Canyon over the course of 36 days. The trip called for more planning than a traditional thru-hike, because there was no opportunity for resupply. I was solo. A major gear failure would not only end the trip, but require an exhaustive evacuation.
