A team-taught course highlighting development of the field and the broad range of topics covered in the major. Example topics include addiction, analogy, animal cognition, human-computer interaction, language, neuroimaging, neural networks, reasoning, robots, and real-world applications. This course is an introduction to the neuroscience behind the principles of economic decision-making. The topics in this course are aimed at exploring the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms that drive the decisions behind traditional economic models.

These are tentative schedules. Please consult the official Schedule of Classes on TritonLink each quarter. Why do humans, individually and in groups, attribute natural events to supernatural agents? How does the human brain accept religious beliefs, even in the face of contradictory evidence? We will examine how cognitive, developmental, and cultural factors work together to cause humans to believe in the supernatural. Topics covered include: the history of AI and Cognitive Science; basic mechanics of LLMs; the emerging field of "LLM-ology"; philosophy of mind; how LLMs can help inform research on human cognition; the role of sensorimotor grounding in cognition and the development of multimodal LLMs; and the impacts of LLMs on human culture and society more broadly. Students learn skills and are assigned responsibilities based on the project to which they are assigned. Students also participate in a journal club and prepare brief end-of-quarter presentations and reports. It is a 3-quarter sequence. Content, skills, and responsibilities evolve and expand every quarter.

Cognitive science is a diverse field that is unified and motivated by a single basic inquiry: What is cognition? UC San Diego has been at the forefront of this exciting field and the Department of Cognitive Science was the first of its kind in the world. It is part of an exceptional scientific community and remains a dominant influence in the field it helped create. In addition to preparing undergraduates for careers in a variety of sciences, the major also provides an excellent background for many professional fields, including medicine, clinical psychology, and information technology. The concerns of cognitive science fall into three broad categories: the brain—the neurological anatomy and processes underlying cognitive phenomena; behavior—the cognitive activity of individuals and their interaction with each other and their sociocultural environment, including the use of language, information, and media; and computation—the capacity of mathematical and computer systems to model cognitive and neural phenomena and represent information, and the role of computers as cognitive tools. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the department by sharing their ideas about curriculum, research, and other topics with faculty and staff. Undergraduate students should join the Cognitive Science Student Association, which provides opportunities for undergraduates to meet students and faculty from UC San Diego and other institutes, visit research laboratories, and make job contacts. Graduate students take an especially active role in shaping the department, both academically and administratively, while they gain experience in research, teaching, and managing both labs and department affairs.

Image Recognition 4 This course is designed to open the doors for students who are interested in learning about the basic tools and technologies for image classification and recognition. Information Visualization 4 This course frames information visualization as a quintessential cognitive science problem within our interdisciplinary field. May be repeated when topics vary. Neural Signal Processing 4 This course will cover theoretical foundations and practical applications of signal processing to neural data. How damaged and normal brains influence the way humans solve problems, remember or forget, pay attention to things; how they affect our emotions, and the way we use language in daily life. Introduction to functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI methods for cognitive neuroscience research. A team-taught course highlighting development of the field and the broad range of topics covered in the major. Does music have evolutionary or ecological significance? Covers the fundamental concepts that underlie all programming languages and provides an introduction to the essential information about algorithms and data structures. This independent study course is for small groups of advanced students who wish to complete a one-quarter reading or research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. Data science is multidisciplinary, covering computer science, statistics, cognitive science and psychology, data visualization, artificial intelligence and machine learning, among others. This practicum for graduate students provides experience in teaching undergraduate cognitive science courses. Social Computing 4 This course explores the intersection of social behavior and computational systems.

An introduction to the experimental study of cognition with a focus on sensation and perception. COGS 8. Brain rhythms play a critical role in perception and cognition. This project-based course focuses on learning and applying the process of human-centered cognitive design. Does music have evolutionary or ecological significance? Students who believe they could be offended by the study of swearing and other taboo language might not find this course appropriate for them. Integrative models of gene-environment interaction will be discussed. This course will review the literature that correlates brain rhythms in the human EEG with aspects of cognition, behavioral states, neuropsycho-pharmacology, and psychopathology in order to understand the psychological and neurophysiological underpinnings of these experiences. In this course we will explore the psychology, philosophy, and evolutionary origins of humor and laughter. Statistical Inference and Data Analysis 2 or 4 This course provides a rigorous treatment of hypothesis testing, statistical inference, model fitting, and exploratory data analysis techniques used in the cognitive and neural sciences. This course will allow cognitive science honors students to explore advanced issues in the field of cognitive science research.
