UCL History is unusual both for the innovation of our work and for our chronological breadth. Members of the department specialize in periods from BCE through to the present, with distinctive geographical strengths in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, as well as Europe and Britain. We have shaped a wide variety of fields, from intellectual and cultural history, medieval history, early modern British history, to histories of the British Empire, transnational and comparative history, and material history. Our work has played major roles in debates about slavery and the British empire and public history , notably through the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery. We offer a wide range of modules on taught MA programmes, a supportive environment through small-group teaching, and individual support through one-to-one supervision. Here, you will have unrivalled access to archives, libraries, museums and other intellectual activities which thrive in the heart of Bloomsbury, London. Students will examine the theoretical and methodological approaches available for the study of cultures, ideas, and identities in the historical past. An introductory week considers the nature and interrelation of these three types of subject matter, which constitute the main concerns of cultural historians. It is followed by three weeks devoted to each type of subject, for each of which we consider a range of theoretical and methodological approaches. While the module considers the development of cultural history as a field, its emphasis is on approaches currently being deployed by historians doing cutting-edge work, such as historical anthropology, Begriffsgeschichte, and gender history.
