Instead of an internal analysis uncovering the formation, the X shape was spotted by astronomers on Twitter when the image was posted as part of an investigation to map the galaxies outside of the Milky Way by Dustin Lang, an astronomer at the University of Toronto. What caught the attention of Twitter was a three-dimensional bulge in the middle of the Milky Way's flat structure. Within the shape Melissa Ness, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, recognised the significance of the 'X' and got in touch with Lang. Ness added that the presence of the bulge is proof there have been no major astronomical events since the formation of the Milky Way, else the shape of the 'X' wouldn't have been maintained. The Milky Way is a disk galaxy — a collection of stars and gas in a rotating disk. In these kinds of galaxies, Nasa explained , when the thin disk of gas and stars is large enough, a 'stellar bar' may form, consisting of stars moving in a box-shaped orbit around the centre.
