Ages ago, in another universe, a trio of beings known as the Divine have been attempting to purge all evil from several universes with the aid of a planet sized object called the Heart of Darkness, which sucks out evil from those it latches onto. Also in the New 52, Trigon devoured the evil Heart of Darkness artifact which causes him to be hungry for evil and allows him to grow stronger in the presence of evil energies or beings by feeding on their evil.
