Toronto police Const. Robert Konashewych, left, seen here in a June 1, , file photo, was convicted of forging a will to steal the unclaimed estate of Heinz Sommerfeld, right. While suspended, Const. The pair were convicted last June and sentenced Tuesday for carrying out the fraud in connection with her former job at the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. While only she was convicted of breach of trust, Konashewych nonetheless abused his position as a police officer when he committed the crime, Superior Court Justice Sean Dunphy wrote in his sentencing reason. These attributes can be used to encourage people not to inquire more closely into what is being done in plain sight. This coming April , after years of criticism about the practice, police chiefs will be allowed to suspend officers who are convicted of serious offences. The Police Services Act, which sets the legal standard for police discipline, has meant police services are forced to continue paying officers who are awaiting trial on serious offences, including murder, or those convicted of a crime but not sentenced to jail. Even after an officer is fired, they can still be paid for months or more while appealing the dismissal. A former Toronto area police officer has begun serving a more than seven-year jail sentence after Ontario's top court dismissed an appeal of his conviction on corruption charges earlier this week. Richard Senior, who served 16 years with the service, on Feb. That investigation led officers to believe Senior had been involved in "a number of criminal enterprises, including the attempted armed robbery of a quantity of cocaine; the theft and illegal possession of a York Regional Police shotgun; the trafficking of steroids to another officer; trafficking cocaine; and the disclosing of confidential police information," the release states. During his trial in February , the Crown alleged that the officer had filed an intelligence report about his former mistress and attributed the information to a fake confidential source. Other allegations presented by the prosecution included selling steroids to another undercover officer, stealing money he was given to pay informants and inappropriately accessing a police database to disclose confidential information. Ultimately, Senior was convicted of eight charges, including trafficking cocaine, trafficking testosterone, and possession of a weapon obtained by crime, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized use of a computer, and breach of trust and, later that year, sentenced to seven-and-a-half-years in jail.
