When Mark Rober set out to break the record for world's smallest Nerf gun, he never expected he'd end up making more mini Nerf guns than tiny nerf gun total number of actual Nerf guns ever to exist. In his yearlong mission, Rober ended up breaking the record five times by collaborating with leading experts and employing different engineering techniques. His first few batches of mini Nerf blasters were made possible by drastically simplifying the design of the Nerf gun.
Seven years ago, Rober went viral after creating the largest Nerf Gun in history. For his most recent video, he took that same concept and sprinted in the opposite direction, by asking scientists to create some of the tiniest Nerf gun models ever. Howell to design a fully functional miniature Nerf gun that could fit on a human finger. The tiny scale Rober envisioned for the project meant it would be impossible to design the model using the combination of moving parts and springs that allows an ordinary Nerf Gun to fire its payload of air propelled foam bullets. Instead, the team opted to design their mini-Nerf out of a single 3D-printed block in order to avoid issues with friction between moving parts. The end result was a fully functional model that could fire a single bullet using a series of inbuilt springs just a couple of centimetres long but still capable of firing a dart a distance of almost three feet. The CAD file for the spring-powered Nerf has been made available free online for people with 3D printers.

That journey leads the engineer and YouTuber extraordinaire straight to his alma mater, Brigham Young University. But of course, you never know what the challenges are going to be. One challenge, according to Howell, was to design a solid, one-piece compliant mechanism that could replace the many, many pieces of a traditional Nerf blaster. It was critical that they nailed down the right design so it worked at a large scale, a small scale, and then a microscopic scale, manufactured using carbon nanotube technologies. Another challenge was using the right technology to create something that small. Needless to say, the highly technical challenge took months of trial and error. Rober and his team visited campus this fall to finish the project and film the results: a nano-sized Nerf blaster, roughly the size of a fleck of pepper, that successfully shoots a microscopic dart at a worthy but disinterested opponent: an ant. Howell also wrote a newly published opinion piece in the highly ranked journal Nature Communications about the work his lab is doing with engineering outreach that ties into the Mark Rober collaboration.
