Dell's XPS 13 has been the pace car for the Windows side of the thin-and-light laptop race for years now, ever since it adopted the now-ubiquitous ultra-thin display bezel back in Dell was also a step ahead of the competition a couple of years ago when it moved to a slightly taller screen with a aspect ratio, further improving the design's usability without increasing its size. But for power users who can afford to spend a few hundred extra dollars, Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon has always been an appealing upsell. It's a little lighter than Dell's ultraportable, but it nevertheless manages to fit in a bigger screen and a better port selection. Lenovo's laptop keyboards and trackpads are almost always best in class. And the ThinkPad's pedigree as a business laptop means that the Carbon's design still makes nods to repairability and upgradability, even if many of its internal components have still been soldered down to save space. This year's version of the X1 Carbon —we're up to Gen 10, if anyone's counting—doesn't change much on the outside.

With 10 generations of improvements under its belt, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is one of the most refined portable PCs available today, a classic in every sense of the world, and one that remains best-in-class. The carbon fiber and magnesium build is as iconic as it is durable, and I still love how it looks as much as I respect its rigidity and durability. Unlike the mostly aluminum designs of its competitors, the X1 Carbon is thin, light, and almost soft to the touch. Not soft like cheap plastic, but soft like a premium car interior. Of course, that also means that not much has changed year-over-year. In , Lenovo brought display panes to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon line, resulting in smaller bezels all around and a better productivity experience. And so this year, Lenovo is focusing on adding more display choices, which is fine, and fitting a much better webcam into the top bezel, which necessitates the small bump that is quickly becoming a new Lenovo design trademark. But the firm is really going all out this year, and there are now seven display options. There may be too many choices, but there is at least something for everyone. I would probably go with the nearly identical non-touch panel were I configuring it myself, but this is an ideal panel for productivity work regardless.

Thinkpad x1 carbon gen 10

With its iconic design, incredible build quality, and epic portability, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon has long set the bar in premium business laptops. Predictably, the 12th generation version continues this tradition of excellence with a long list of small but meaningful upgrades. But as it turns out, Lenovo has made numerous small changes to this product since then, and many of them are noteworthy improvements. The closer you look, the more differences you see. None of that seems all that dramatic, but the X1 Carbon is a featherweight in a world of 3-topound inch Ultrabooks, with an incredibly airy feel. And you can see the reductions in the display bezels, which are thinner all around, but especially at the top and bottom. The design is cleaner than before, assuming you can overlook a few oily smudges your hands will leave behind on the wrist rest and outer display lid. Where previous versions featured a grid of speaker holes on both sides of the keyboard, the 12th Gen unit moves the speakers under the keyboard, so no holes are required. And previously bright bits, like the display hinge ends and angled ThinkPad logo on the wrist rest are now matte black like the rest of the product. The logo is also debossed, meaning pushed in, as opposed to embossed as on previous versions.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has always been a relatively thin and light inch laptop , and the Gen 12 model maintains that key attribute. Normally, ThinkPads have a much wider range of configurations.
