I was simply trying to decide which would work best as an upgrade from my K rig and the only thing I had in the way of CPU cooling was my ancient, OG Thermalright TRUE Ultra Extreme which is god knows how old and has been sitting in a closet all these years.

It's included fan speed control was extremely shoddy. Had pics but lost them to HDD crash of both internal and backup. I was simply trying to decide which would work best as an upgrade from my K rig and the only thing I had in the way of CPU cooling was my ancient, thermalright ultra 120 extreme am4, OG Thermalright TRUE Ultra Extreme which is god knows how old and has been sitting in a closet all these years.

They added two more heatpipes to the Ultra and renamed it the Ultra eXtreme. Did this simple modification improve the already excellent performance of one of the biggest tower heatsinks around? Thermalright has a long tradition of making excellent heatsinks with simple, aesthetically pleasing designs.

Obviously this cooler isn't compatible with an AM4 motherboard without the required AM4 mounting kit so i followed the steps on their website and contacted Thermalright by e-mail and this is what they replied: Hi, as stated on the website the kit itself is for free — we only charge the freight cost insured UPS package and a small handling fee. They're putting a copper coldplate revision out, soon. I don't upset easily and certainly not forums. Always good to hear how things turn out, especially when it's so good. But was using some crazy fans on it.. I never did get around to mounting it to AM4. I've been told Noctua's mount also work on thick base Thermalright coolers but I haven't tried it. PA would have fit I bet.. It's included fan speed control was extremely shoddy.. BTK mount is only compatible with thick base coolers like ones listed below.
We managed to get our hands on a new Thermalright cooler that can be considered a real rarity.

I have the two running at full speed right now, and while I can hear them, the sound signature is a lot nicer than what I am used to. I didn't have any retention hardware to speak of so I simply had to let it kind of "float" there on a layer of thermal compound lol. I inspected it to find it was assembled with heat glue gun and glue melted with it's own heat. Indeed, it's still a very good cooler! Mainly because a blade from the center fan came off and then bounced off of my then buck motherboard lol.
