The Promise tells the story of two British characters - Erin Claire Foy the promise tv series 2011, an year-old Londoner who visits present-day Israel for the first time, and her grandfather, Len Christian Cooke - a soldier in the British peace-keeping force in s Palestine. She travels to Israel to carry out National Service in the army and invites Erin to join her for the summer. Erin is anticipating a summer of parties and attractive, young Israeli men but just before she departs she finds her sick grandfather's diary.

Alan Bleasdale has always been the master of this format but, with 'The Promise', Peter Kosminsky joins him at the top. All 8hrs is used to maximum effect. The Promise is a British television serial in four episodes written and directed by Peter Kosminsky , with music by Debbie Wiseman. It tells the story of a young woman who goes to present-day Israel and Palestine determined to find out about her soldier grandfather's involvement in the final years of Palestine under the British mandate. It premiered on Channel 4 on 6 February Erin Matthews is a British teenager about to start her gap year. She is taken reluctantly to see her grandfather Len, in his eighties, who is in hospital paralysed by a stroke. Erin hardly knows him, but whilst helping her mother to clear out his flat she finds a diary of his time in the 6th Airborne Division in British Mandate Palestine after the Second World War. Her mother wants to throw it away, but she surreptitiously keeps it. She decides to take up her best friend Eliza's offer to spend time in Israel, while she undergoes basic training for her compulsory Israeli military service. As they fly out Erin starts to read the diary, and becomes fascinated; it opens with Len describing "the worst day of his life so far" — the horror of liberating Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
