In our Video Games section of this site, we have tried to examine the intersection between games and film, mainly covering titles that could be considered "cinematic. After suffering in development hell as a potential feature film for a few years—one that was almost produced by Sam Raimi and almost starred Maisie Williams —"The Last of Us" took a hard right into a different medium, becoming the first HBO video game adaptation as a multi-season probably dramatic series. On Sunday, January 15 th , the nine-episode first season of "The Last of Us" closely follows the first game's action, recently rereleased in a PS5 version retitled "The Last of Us, Part 1," from its heartbreaking prologue through to its perfect ending. It's a fascinating deconstruction of the game that leans on character and storytelling instead of action, and it does so in a way that's confidently grounded. Some of the major set pieces from the game are carried over, but it's more about survival, growth, and hope than killing waves of enemies. The result is a show that amplifies what a phenomenal piece of storytelling the game was in the first place, taking a video game more seriously than any adaptation has to date.

Starting with The Last of Us: Stranger Than Fiction , is a featurette for people who have been wondering about the likelihood of a fungus creating the post-apocalyptic disaster. The cast and filmmakers speak to experts in survival, microbiology, and parasitology for a discussion on the realities of the invasive fungus and subsequent apocalypse. From Levels to Live Action will showcase how the series incorporated and expanded fan-favorite game moments in the series. On February 10, , it was reported that Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie in the series.

For its time, The Last of Us was the greatest game ever made. Almost every facet of the work is finetuned to near perfection. It pushed the Playstation 3 to its limits with top-of-the-line animation and graphical fidelity that was brought to life by actors and motion capture artists only rivaled by L. A decade later, and The Last of Us has endured as an IP with only one sequel—which outdoes the first in every way. The cinematic direction by Neil Druckman , and the cinematic presentation of the violent skirmishes in-game, make the series perfectly adaptable to film or television.
