The album's title is partly inspired by the character, Hawkfrom the television series, the front bottoms wikipedia, Twin Peaks. I was sitting in the van and drew this pocket knife. I thought it was a badass nickname. As it was getting close to the time we needed to make a decision on the album name, I found the picture with the pocket knife that I had drawn in the van coming back from recording.
The group formed in Soon after, Uychich's brother Brian Uychich keyboard, vocals began sitting in on their practices. Brian asked to join the band, playing an old keyboard he found in the Uychich family attic. This completed the original lineup, with which the first two albums and EP were recorded. They spent the next few years playing locally around New Jersey and eventually doing extensive tours around the country. In between tours, Sella worked at a grocery store and Uychich worked in landscaping.

He stated that "The inspiration for the name Back On Top sort of just came from… it was an idea that we had like, a while ago, when we all kind of got a kick out it. You can kind of grasp on different parts of it. He then went on to talk about the writing and recording process, stating "the writing and recording process sort of… we wrote the album, and then we went out to record it in California. We got to work with an awesome producer and we got to throw our ideas at him, and I think we got to kind of learn how to make an album professionally, you know? The band announced they were releasing their first album under Fueled By Ramen on July 30, They released the lead single, Help, off the album the same day.
