Living Trees are large tree-shaped structures generated at world creation. Unlike regular trees , Living Trees are constructed from foreground Living Wood and Leaf Blocks , rather than being background objects that characters can pass through. Living Trees are very large and often but not always contain an internal, vertical tunnel structure which leads down to a room containing Living Tree-themed furniture and a Living Wood Chest , all of which can be looted. They also have horizontal tunnels that can connect to other trees or lead outside of them. Chests can be generated inside these tunnels.

Trees are the largest plants in Terraria , appearing mostly at the surface and often in clusters with similar height. Most trees can be chopped down with an axe or chainsaw , or destroyed with the use of explosives or by pouring lava on their bases. Destroying or chopping down a tree will yield many units of its respective Wood , an essential crafting material , and has a chance of dropping one or more Acorns that can be planted to grow more trees. Larger trees will yield more of these two items when removed; one unit of Wood will drop for each block of tree including branches , and one Acorn may drop for each leaf patch. It is possible to cut off parts of the tree, but cutting at the lowermost center tile will destroy the entire tree. If parts of the tree are left, they will not regrow. Tiles beneath trees cannot be destroyed or actuated. Tree saplings can be painted , although this will not affect the tree at all. However, painting the blocks underneath the sapling will result in the tree being painted when it matures. Three other large plants do not drop Wood and spawn differently, but are otherwise treated similarly to trees. Forest trees are the most common type of tree, and can be found growing on regular grass. They can be planted on regular grass in any biome.

Trees are the only source of Wood in the game with the exception of underground houses and Splinterlings , they can be found in all Biomes apart from the Dungeon , Underground Hallow , Underground Corruption , and Underground Crimson. Cutting down a tree using an Axe or Chainsaw will always give you some Wood , and sometimes acorns. All trees essentially have the same width of up to three tiles except Living Wood Trees , but their height can vary quite a bit. You can place torches on trees. It is not possible to destroy a block directly beneath trees with a pickaxe. The blocks will remain unbreakable until the tree grown on it is cut down. The Drill Containment Unit and explosives, however, will break the blocks and the tree. It is advisable to cut trees at their lowest point at the center, the trunk.
