They had originally been training boats used by the Royal Naval Sailing Association. This shape of dinghy was first introduced in , when they became part of the apprenticeship scheme in naval dockyards. Trainee boat builders would begin by making their own tools, then gradually progress to creating small vessels like these. This class of boat was chosen for the film because they are small enough for a child to sail but also large enough to hold a camera crew and their equipment. I liked them when I was five, I liked them when I was 12, and I like them now, with Titty still being my favourite. Swallows and Amazons is like that, about the way that children can wrap a cloak of imagination around their activities.
