Welcome back! I guess if we were continuing with the clever alliterative names for things I would call this Wagon Wednesday. Actually, you know what? Screw it; I am calling it that. One of them is even four-wheel-drive!

You won't find any Subaru s in U-Wrench yards these days I haven't seen a discarded since the early s , but I still find plenty of Malaise-Era Subarus from the period during which they were mocked for their small size in novelty songs. Here's a seriously loaded by earlys standards Subaru Leone four-wheel-drive wagon, found last fall in a yard just south of Denver. Back in those days, Subaru USA just called this car "the Subaru" and used the trim levels as confusing model names. There was the base model with no name, the mid-grade DL, and the high-end GL. Four-wheel-drive was optional on Subarus at this point, though nearly all Colorado buyers paid for this feature. Unlike later all-wheel-drive systems with center differentials, this setup was true four-wheel-drive, which would tear up your tires or worse if you drove for too long on dry pavement with 4WD engaged. This proved very confusing for many owners of these cars as well as those with four-wheel-drive-equipped Toyota Tercels and Honda Civics , a bit later in the decade. Check out the controls for the extremely rare dealer-installed air conditioning! This car has everything. By far the coolest optional feature on this car is the rare "third eye" center-mounted driving light, which lives behind this flip-up panel in the center of the grille and was actuated via a dash-mounted switch. Did I buy the entire grille and third-eye assembly, for installation as a ceiling-mounted work light in my garage? You bet I did! With just over , miles on the clock, this car appears to have been very well cared-for during its life.
Stone cold reliable, but slower than the second coming… For what its worthmy Brats 1. Frank Bray. Power in state US trim was 67 hp 50 kW at rpm two horsepower less in Californiaalthough drivability and gas mileage suffered distinctly from the emissions equipment, subaru 1982 wagon.

My generation X may have been the last one to be raised in true station wagons; we came directly before the minivan explosion. Before Chrysler unleashed the Caravan on America, the RWD wagon was still respectable, held a ton of suitcases, Christmas presents, two kids and a dog, and could be counted on to make it through the high snow in Pennsylvania on December 24th.

It has a custom 3" lift in the front and a 2" lift in the back it looks level. It's had it's carburetor rebuilt professionally last year. It gets good gas mileage for an older car. It has new front brake assemblies, a new alternator, a new right side CV axle and new boots on the left, new water pump, new radiator and gas caps, a new fuel pump and radiator fan wiring to keep fans on when running for optimal car temperature. It has the stock 3rd headlight that is fully operational, it's heater works great and it has rare upgraded 4 lug Peugeot wheels with new front tires. Plus a full sized Peugeot spare and a rooftop basket.

It was located in San Jose — about an hour away. When we arrived we were directed to the carport in which it sat. Looking at it from the back it looked OK, just a small dent below the 4WD badge and a cracked taillight. The left side had some minor scuffs but the right side had a fairly mangled front fender. The roommate just wanted it gone. And now I had what can fairly be described as an old car with a lot of miles on it. In this case a low price, 4WD and being a wagon were huge positives. I said it was a ; in reality it could have been anywhere from to , I just do not recall and no longer have any documentation.
