The original system provided water to customers within a 2, square mile area. In SRWD had reached its design capacity. Potential customers were being turned away due to the lack of adequate infrastructure to serve any additional users. The project is being completed in phases due to the availability of funding. SRWD is currently in the process of completing Phase 6 of the system-wide expansion project. To date, the system-wide expansion project includes the addition of 1, new customers, 1, miles of pipeline, 2 pump stations, 4 above ground water storage tanks and increasing the water treatment plant from gpm to 2, gpm. The industrial contract also included transporting 46 million gallons per year of discharge water from the power plant, 9 miles, through a inches pipeline, to a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Jamestown, ND. The current customer base has grown from to 2, rural users which expands into 20 small towns, 33 urban subdivisions, a large 1, cow dairy operation and the industrial customers located in the Spiritwood Energy Park Association SEPA which includes a power plant and an ethanol plant. SRWD supplies bulk water to 3 towns. The towns have abandoned their aging water treatment facilities to receive a dependable, high quality water supply from SRWD.

The dry summer has produced an opportunity for Stutsman Rural Water District to bolster its infrastructure, according to Geneva Kaiser, manager of the district. Kaiser said low water levels in the northern portion of Jamestown Reservoir will allow the district to add a redundant waterline to the system without the costs of boring under the reservoir. Plans call for the installation of an 8-inch waterline next to an existing 5-inch line. The project involves about 1, feet of pipe and trench. When completed, the project will add redundancy to the water system serving the northern part of Stutsman County and could improve the water supply and pressure in that area. An easement for the river crossing was approved by the Stutsman County Commission Tuesday. The commission did request the water district provide a better description of where the pipe will cross the lake bed for the document.
