A closely-fought qualifying session means the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday night will boast one of the most varied grids of the season, with no less than eight teams featuring in the top 10 for lights-out. The Scuderia dominated qualifying, but a place grid penalty means Carlos Sainz will start from P12 , rather than alongside his team mate. Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly make up row two, the latter securing his best grid slot of the year, and then come the Williams — the standout performers in qualifying — with Alex Albon in P5 and rookie Logan Sargeant starting his home race from a career-best P6. Row four comprises Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo and Kevin Magnussen in the Haas, while Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton complete the top half of the grid, both former champions having endured disappointing qualifying sessions. The start of the United States Grand Prix will feature something rather unusual for — very little chance of a Red Bull leading into Turn 1. World champion and Saturday's Sprint winner Max Verstappen starts sixth behind Carlos Sainz and George Russell after his best Q3 lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits. At the other end of the order, no fewer than four cars will be starting from the pit lane after Haas and Aston Martin opted to change the set-ups for both their drivers ahead of the race. For the former, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg had qualified 14th and 16th respectively, while for the latter Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll had been due to start 17th and 19th. Nico Hulkenberg was a surprise Q3 contender to take 10th for Haas, but it was a nightmare qualifying for Alpine with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly on the back row of the grid. After Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso paced two of the three practice sessions, Red Bull fought back in qualifying as reigning world champion Verstappen led a ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez. Alonso dropped to fifth in Q3 of qualifying, falling behind both Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, while the Monegasque driver opted against a final run to preserve a set of soft tyres for the race. That left the Red Bulls a clean run at locking out the front row, while the team expects its race pace to be stronger than its qualifying efforts. A delighted Alonso still believes a podium is possible after outqualifying both Mercedes drivers, as George Russell took sixth and Lewis Hamilton seventh to mark a disappointing start to the season for the German manufacturer.
