My daughter uses the bus regularly for a 9 mile trip to school and back. You can see the bus not moving on the app a mile away not moving. Occasionally they will put their out of service sign on as they pass the school kids. But you can see on the app they then stop to pick up other passengers. When we looked at the school Stagecoach had a stand there and they told us how they would provide a reliable service and look after our children. Stagecoach Group is a transport group based in Perth, Scotland. It operates buses, express coaches and a tram service in the United Kingdom. Stagecoach was originally founded in as Gloagtrotter , a recreational vehicle and minibus hire business. During the early s, it took advantage of the deregulation of the British express coach market , launching services from Dundee to London using second-hand Neoplan coaches, competing against the then state-owned National Express Coaches and Scottish Citylink. Stagecoach purchased several recently-privatised national bus groups from London Regional Transport , the National Bus Company , Scottish Bus Group and various city councils, as well as pursuing those that had opted for management buyouts and employee-owned corporations. During August , Stagecoach acquired roughly one-third of all passenger rolling stock in the UK via the acquisition of the recently-privatised leasing company Porterbrook ; it sold the company on four years later. In , Stagecoach was awarded the franchise to operate the recently privatised Sheffield Supertram system.
In a sudden U-turn, Stagecoach said it was recommending a sale to the fund managed by DWS Infrastructure for p a share in cash, and has withdrawn support for the National Express bid. The announcement came just hours before Stagecoach suffered a strategic blow in its attempt to halt bus franchising around England. Stagecoach has fought bitterly against plans to reverse the deregulation that enabled its initial growth in the s. That tie-up was being investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority, which served an initial enforcement order in January to stop the firms from combining operations or selling any UK businesses while it looked into the deal. It added that the new deal, which is expected to be completed in the first half of this year, would also provide continuity at the top, with the chief executive, finance director and UK managing director staying on. In recent years, Stagecoach has shrunk, after selling its US operations and being squeezed out of UK rail. Stagecoach, which a decade back looked to swallow up National Express, now is set to be subsumed by its rival. The turnaround in its fortunes has been influenced by foreign ventures, and the pandemic has magnified all of its problems. It became a dominant player in many regional markets, where cherrypicked routes allowed it to run at handsome margins — to the increasing disquiet of customers and local councils. After rail was privatised, Stagecoach was the first operator to open a service — and then joined forces with Sir Richard Branson to run Virgin Trains, one of the great exemplars of the new regime: arguably improving customer service, innovation and passenger numbers — and indisputably reaping whopping dividends from the west coast mainline. But that proved a disastrous miscalculation: Stagecoach pulled the plug as losses mounted, and the line again returned to state control. National Express, of course, had already been there: overbidding to run the franchise and forced to hand back the keys in , when it looked like the firm could be prey for Souter. Perhaps it was fortunate to see the warning signs earlier, and focus on overseas expansion instead. It exited UK rail with the sale of C2C in — and in the boardroom, flogging the franchise to the Italians was soon seen as one of the best bits of business ever pulled off. In its local bus operation, National Express also appeared to run increasingly with the grain.
