A breezy new Sri Lankan restaurant has arrived in Surry Hills, taking over a two-storey space to bring a fun and fresh dining experience to the area. Kurumba comes from the crew behind The Fold in Dulwich Hill, which closed down earlier in The end of that chapter led to the being of this one, with the team moving to Surry Hills to open an ambitious new multi-space venue. Upstairs, you'll find the dining room that spotlights traditional Sri Lankan eats while mixing things up with the addition of Sydney menu staples like Sydney rock oysters, Western Australian lobster and smoked brisket. Downstairs, there's a casual bar where you can snack on hoppers over a glass of top-notch wine. It felt like something no other Sri Lankan restaurant was doing," continues De Hoedt. Highlights from the main dining room include smoked brisket pan rolls, kajugama tiger prawns in a chilli cashew butter and crispy pork belly curry. If you're okay with splurging a little, Kurumba's signature dish is the lobster kottu — a chopped roti, vegetable and lobster-head curry. The set menu is a great way to attack the meal, especially if you're in a group. If you've got the space, there's only one way to round out your meal at Kurumba. While there are a few desserts on offer, the falluda soft serve is a must-try, adding rose syrup, crystallised pistachio and crispy vermicelli to the nostalgic sweet treat. By Katya Wachtel. By Matheus. Kurumba will feel familiar to fans of the De Hoedts: mum Dilki oversees front of house, dad Augi heads up the kitchen and son Travin Franca Brasserie is general manager. Kurumba means young coconut in Sinhala, and the ingredient is found in many Sri Lankan dishes, from sambols to curries and desserts. The menu here might start with pan rolls filled with beef brisket; and seeni sambol puffs , where the relish of spiced caramelised onions is topped with Vannella buffalo curd. The signature dish is a WA lobster kottu with curry: housemade roti is chopped in a wok on high heat, with pan-seared lobster added on top, and served with roasted lobster head curry. Cocktails also incorporate Sri Lankan flavours, such as the Rumba Kurumba, where Ceylon arak joins tart calamansi citrus, young coconut water and pandan in a small coconut.
Kurumba serves up modern and luxe takes on traditional Sri Lankan dishes from lobster kottu rotti, hot butter soft shell crab to a rich beef short rib curry. So what are the must order dishes here? Kurumba is a family run restaurant and on this evening it looks like almost the whole De Hoedt family there. Dad Augi Augustus is in the kitchen, son Jason is making hoppers and mum Dilki is working on the floor. The final member Travin is in Japan doing a chocolate course.
