Spyro is the main protagonist and title character of The Legend of Spyro series. He is a rare purple dragon destined to bring hope to the world. When developing The Legend of Spyro , the task was to visually reinvent the franchise. For Jared Pullen , it was about coming up with something that resonated with the modern audience of the time while not alienating the established Spyro the Dragon fanbase. Jared designed Spyro during the development of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning , keeping the young hero similar to his previous game designs in appearance. John Welsh, producer of A New Beginning in Krome Studios , stated that Spyro as a character had also embodied the same stronger lines, tones and textures that are concurrent and thematic throughout the game. His crest, back ridges, horns and tail fin indicate the strength of his character and that was all very deliberate.

It is the first installment in The Legend of Spyro trilogy. A New Beginning uses a more action-based focus than previous Spyro games. Rather than the previous focus on platforming, the gameplay is now more combat based. Spyro has a variety of combat moves as well as four different breath attacks: fire, electricity, ice and earth, which he can use as both long range and short range attacks. Spyro can also use furies, huge blasts of elemental energy. The game has fewer levels than previous Spyro games, with six levels that progress from a starting point towards a final destination and boss encounter in a linear fashion, and two rail shooter style flying levels adjoining them. It takes about six hours to complete the game.

Dawn of the Dragon ships for Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and Xbox and, as you might expect, the PS3 and builds sport the most visual polish, featuring more detailed graphics by way of crisper textures, more robust particle effects and through it all a better framerate. The fact that publisher Activision has put forth the cash to secure big-name voice talent for the game's characters -- Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman, Wayne Brady, Christina Ricci, Blair Underwood and Mark Hamill -- is equally admirable, the result a story well-acted and in turn more immersive. As Spyro and Cynder embark on a quest to stop the Dark Master from spreading his evil across the land, you will immediately notice the massive scope of the environments and the semi-open-ended setup of the world, an improvement over previous outings. While levels do remain linear in that you must advance to one exit sooner or later, the route you take to the point is yours for the choosing and Spyro and Cynder can move freely into any direction. The shape of the experience reminds me of classics like Zelda, but Nintendo's series shines brighter where geometrical-based puzzles, balance and progression are concerned.
