Guys, what if I were to tell you that there was an entire island in the Mississippi River that was once actually used by local residence, equipped with baseball fields, small buildings and a playground, would you believe me? I thought this was total bull There's actually an abandoned island in the Mississippi River by St. Cloud State University called Sportsman's Island. I had lived in St. Cloud my entire life without ever hearing about this mysterious plot of land. One of our interns mentioned it in casual conversation and puzzled, I asked, "what are you talking about. I didn't believe him. But he insisted he has actually been to the island and saw the buildings and playground himself. It turns out it's all true.

But as the years passed, those who had been most involved with the club began giving up the reins. Cloud resident who lives near Sportsman's Island.

The St. Cloud Community Wildlife Club leased the acre island from the St. Cloud Country Club and formally dedicated it in to long lines of curious sightseers. I've lived in the St. Cloud area most of my life. So of course, I know what the Beaver Islands are. But, aside from the view I get of them daily while crossing the University Bridge heading to and from my home in southeast St. Cloud, I really didn't know a whole lot about them. The session itself was a chance for community leaders and residents to get together and swap ideas about streets, parks, business development, neighborhoods and other areas that factor into efforts to update the city's comprehensive plan. My fellow neighborhoods reporter Kari Petrie was there as well, and wrote about it for the Times website and Friday's newspaper. A specific idea I heard more than once at the session was potentially developing one or more of the islands into some type of public park. Which got me thinking: How many islands are there? What's on them now?

But the only sounds heard these days when one sets foot on Sportsman's Island is that of their own footsteps trudging through the brush and overgrown grass. Or the calls of the birds in the trees, and the ducks and geese frolicking just off-shore in the back channels of the Mississippi River.
