Just two years earlier, the Akai DS had surprised the world by selling in large quantities, offering excellent sound-per-pound from the by then already ailing open reel format. Basically a large MDF box with metal front plate, to which a very chunky AC motor was affixed, the TC had all the basics needed for fine sound from four-track open reel, but nothing more. Being a mildly re-engineered Sony TC, it was only capable of running up to 7. It played high frequencies well above 20kHz at -3dB, which was something cassette never managed convincingly. The wee Sony was a nice machine to use — in a clunky sort of way, but all open reels without logic control were indeed clunky. A single rotary control took care of the main transport functions, and there were two record keys so the two stereo tracks could be used individually for mono recordings and editing. One large motor provided motive force via an array of pulleys, clutches and belts.

The TC has large-sized VU meters which indicate the average level of complex musical waveforms. Other features include high performance Ferrite and Ferrite heads, tape bias and equalization switches to obtain the maximum characteristics according to the type of tapes, and a tape tension regulator to reduce wow and flutter. Chemi-con caps it uses are pretty good, don't be surprised you find none faulty! Heads are hard ferrite, last well.

I persuaded him to deposit it in the boot of my car instead. He said it worked "last time it was used" So I bought a brand new tape for it, and some spools.
Only two years prior, the Akai DS had stunned the world by selling in significant numbers, delivering outstanding sound-per-pound from the at the time dormant open reel format. The TC was just a huge MDF box with a metal front plate to which a massive AC motor was attached, containing all the essentials for great sound from four-track open reel, but nothing more. It was only capable of running at 7. The little Sony was a fun machine to play — in a cumbersome way, but then again, all open reels without logic control are clunky. The major transport functions were handled by a single rotary control, and there were two record buttons so that the two stereo tracks could be utilized separately for mono recording and editing. An array of pulleys, clutches, and belts produced motive force from a single big motor. Finding a deck that can perform as well as it did when it was first released is a difficult task. Although dry joints and fading capacitors will be an issue 35 years after leaving the factory, the electronics are quite simple and reliable.

Install the app. Quickie way to see if the playback head and circuitry are working if you do not have a known good tape to play: Remove the head cover. Otherwise, when the tape runs out there is a sort of a lever that falls back and cuts off power to the motor. Sony tc Use a piece of adhesive tape to hold it. Yes, it has two source-tape switches and two record buttons which can be used to play and record the tracks separately. As to metering, sluggish meter were a common problem being a mechanical device, even so call peek meters would be put to shame by LEDs. So finding a deck to perform as it was originally capable of is a challenge. Screw out the lock switch knob by turning it clockwise.

Virtually all screwdrivers have at least a little magnetism on them. Just finished a overhaul of a TC i just acquired, took it all apart and lubed everything, changed the belts, cleaned monitor switches, pots, idler wheel, heads, captsan and pincher wheel all cleaning was done using Isopropanol alcohol. The problem is there when playing pre-recorded tape and also when monitoring tape while recording. Replies 7 Views 1K. Be warned, but it helps. I'd like to get it working I am wondering whether to try the Sony one-motor reel deck. I realize this comment was made years ago, but I will respond anyway for others who might stumble upon this.
