The Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk lamp is essentially an upgraded version of the Lightcycle Morph that has been available in select markets for a while. Like the Lightcycle, the Solarcycle Morph also comes in two variations — a desk and a floor lamp. For this review, I was sent the desk version, which is currently the only model available in Australia where I am based. With the update comes a sleeker design compared to the Lightcycle, moving away from an industrial look to what I think is a showpiece, especially in its Ambient mode where the light diffuses through its perforated stand.

The Solarcycle Morph is beautiful, smart and versatile. Morph denotes its versatile qualities: you can use it as a task or reading light, an ambient light or a spotlight. And it has a fresh design that moves away from the industrial, task-light look of the original lamp to a more universally appealing form. Just to add another layer of difficulty, the Solarcycle Morph comes in two forms: a floor and a desk lamp, which share the same design and feature set. The floor lamp is silver and white. In the US and other territories, you can also buy it in brass with black accents and in black. You might think it looks tubular and rather plain as you get it out of the box. But the more time you spend with it, the more lovely it gets, until it starts making all of your other stuff look lumpy and old fashioned. In fact, as the arm can swing degrees on a horizontal plane and the lamp can turn degrees on a vertical axis, you can point it at whatever you want: your book, a piece of artwork on the wall, the desk. And you can change its brightness and the whiteness of the light to suit its function.
