Powter trying to convince someone "you" in the song who's having a rough time, and is basically depressed, to snap out of it - the "bad day" is symbolic of the whole period of depression. Trouble is, the one he's singing about isn't making it easy for him. She's in a vicious cycle of depression and refuses to even try and get out: "You stand in the line just to hit a new low You're faking a smile with the coffee you go You tell me your life's been way off line".
